Asciipocalypse v1.2 — ancient temples, volcanos and ice biomes!

There never would have been a better excuse for me to make a new Asciipocalypse update, than another edition of the DOS Games Jam. Therefore, I've managed to get myself to work once more and during the past month I've introduced some really cool stuff to the game. Most notably — a whooping 3 new themes for the dungeon levels, each with its unique structures,  obstacles, enemies and generation layouts:

  • ancient temple biome inhabited by poison shooting creatures hiding in the surroundings,
  • volcanic biome with wide halls and lava pools,
  • bone-chilling ice biome haunted by wraiths shooting deadly ice projectiles.

First four floors will play out as usual and from the fifth level onwards random theme will be picked every 4 floors to provide an additional challenge.

Other new stuff includes a lot of accessibility / convenience stuff. You can now play using a gamepad or even using your "modern" mouse + keyboard combo (although it's heavily frowned upon :). If the game feels too easy or if the number of enemies and projectiles is overwhelming, you can now change the difficulty. Additionaly, for your late night sessions, I've added a new experimental rendering mode, which is much easier for your eyes (actually, I think it has a lot of potential to become a default rendering mode in the future, after some tweaks).

The game also went through some tweaks and fixes — flying saucer monsters are now slightly less obnoxious, the game's collision system is now running significantly better and the overall level size was slightly reduced to improve the pacing. There are of course even more technical changes, which I won't bother to list there, but keep in mind that they make further development of the game even easier :)

As always, I'm more than glad to to receive any feedback and suggestions regarding the gameplay/performance/etc. Feel free to leave a comment and follow me if you're interested in any future updates :)
